We start Monday 11 September

Welcome back!  We’re looking forward to seeing everyone on Mondays this year.  We hope that Mondays make it easier on everyone and helps us to start the week off on a fun note.  If you are new to our Dojo, come along on Monday evening @ 6:30 at the Quality Hotel in Clonakilty.  Be sure your laptop is charged and ready for a night of activity.    If you would like to be ahead of the game, you can download and install Scratch 2.0 on your laptop and you will be ready to go.  Download Scratch 2.0 here   If you don’t have the time or the thought horrifies you, don’t worry, we’ll have a team of installers on the first night.

For those of you coming back, we can’t wait to see you and hear all about your adventures over the summer.  Don’t forget, we have our Girls Table area where we carve out a space for the Girls to hang out.  We had lots of fun at the Girls Table last year and we’re looking forward to another really successful year.  So if you know of any girls (7+) who might like to have some fun with technology bring them along.

See you all on Monday!

Christmas Break

Last Friday was our last CoderDojo session for 2015. It was a full house as usual overflowing with enthusiasm, creativity and mayhem! We have had a great year in Clonakilty – visits by Drones, lots of robotics, Makey-Makey, CoolestProjects, Scratch Competitions, Hour of Code and an amazing Expo at the end of May. We had a great night last Friday too with a small party, some guitar playing and lots of coding fun and creativity.

So over Christmas if you are looking for something to do here is a list with links to different tools we use at CoderDojo.

Hopefully that’ll keep you all busy coding over the festive season  🙂

So before we sign off for the festive season we would just like to thank a few people

  • Trevor Kingston from High Resolution for keeping us well stocked up in tutorials throughout the year plus allowing us to borrow his 3D printer occasionally.
  • Mags McCarthy for checkin everyone in!
  • Sean Hargaden’s Dad for donating a whole load of Arduinos to us in September
  • Our AMAZING mentors – Sinead, Wendy, Kate, Emer, Kevin, Joe, Ian and all those who help out occasionally and whenever they can. We are sooooo grateful!!! If I have forgotten anybody please let me know!!
  • SouthWestern who so generously sponsored us during the year
  • And finally – THE QUALITY HOTEL (and especially Irene O’Callaghan and David Henry) for the best CoderDojo venue in the world.

Finally, wishing you all and your families a very very Happy Christmas.

25 more sleeps!!

See you in 2016! We will be back on 8th January!

CoderDojo Clonakilty restarting Friday 11th September

Just to let you know that we will be restarting CoderDojo Clonakilty on Friday 11th September (6:30-8:30pm) at the Quality Hotel.

You can register online (commencing Saturday 5th September 9:30am) at http://coderdojoclonakilty.eventbrite.com

Please note that places are limited so early registration is advisable.

If places are full do register on the Waitlist as we always do our very best to accommodate everyone.

At a CoderDojo young people learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and more. Dojos are set up, run by and taught by volunteers. In addition to learning to code, members meet like minded people, share what they have been working on and so on. CoderDojo makes development and learning to code a fun, sociable, interactive experience. CoderDojo also puts a strong emphasis on open source and free software and has a strong network of members and volunteers globally.

CoderDojo has just one rule “ Above All: Be Cool” , bullying, lying, wasting people’s time and so on is uncool.

  • A laptop, if you have one (borrow if necessary) and fully charged where possible.
  • A Parent! Very Important – If you child is Aged 12 and under you must stay with your child for the duration of the session.
  • Extension leads are also very useful.

Places are open to kids age 8 upwards – Some kids do start at age 7+ and we feel that it is up to the parent to decide if they are ready. It really depends on the ability of the child and how happy they are at CoderDojo.

For more information see www.coderdojo.com and www.coderdojowestcork.wordpress.com.

We are very grateful to The Quality Hotel Clonakilty for supplying a venue. Please show your thanks and support the hotel in buying refreshments while you are there. We are also very grateful to our mentors who volunteer each week. If you would like to become a mentor please email clonakilty@coderdojo.com – We will be delighted to hear from you.

Clonakilty CoderDojo EXPO – An event celebrating a very bright future for 60+ young coders

On the 8th May CoderDojo Clonakilty hosted its 3rd EXPO at the Quality Hotel to celebrate the achievements of all the kids who have been attending CoderDojo and allow them the opportunity to showcase their projects, games, apps, websites, robotics and much more to their friends, families and special guests. It was also an opportunity to celebrate CoderDojo Clonakilty’s 3rd Birthday.

Over 65 Young Coders were in attendance and presented their projects ranging from lots of great Scratch games and animations, Lusitania and Fashion/Self-esteem websites  amongst others, an electronic home-made guitar, a human Makey-Makey circuit and 3D Modelling/Printing.

One of our special guests for the evening was Con McCarthy from the European Space Agency who was very impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of all the young coders in the room and spoke to all the kids about his experiences working in the ESA. His audience were clearly mesmerised by his tales and the seed was planted for a number of potential space engineers that evening.  Con stressed the importance of pursuing STEM subjects for their futures and the benefits CoderDojo provides to our local community.

Our Mayor of Clonakilty Colette Twomey was also in attendance and presented a number of awards on the evening. Colette was clearly delighted with what she saw at the EXPO and was impressed with the technical knowledge and ability of such a young group of people. Colette was also very happy to see a number of very capable young girls involved at CoderDojo and highlighted the importance of continuing to attract more girls to CoderDojo and to Science and Technology in general.

As well as celebrating the achievements of the children, the night was also about thanking those that make CoderDojo possible each week —David Henry, Irene O’Callaghan and all the staff at the Quality Hotel for providing a great space for the Dojo each week, Trevor Kingston of HighResolution who kindly provides all our printing including the 3D variety and of course the mentors who provide their valuable time free of charge each week.

The event, sponsored by SouthWestern, was also an opportunity to show more local businesses and IT professionals what CoderDojo is about in an effort to urge more to participate as mentors and in other support roles. The USB bands were sponsored by SouthWestern who were represented by Peadar Murphy on the evening. Peadar is also looking forward to recruiting a number of our CoderDojo graduates in the future.

CoderDojo Clonakilty celebrates its 3rd Birthday with Expo in May!

It’s hard to believe CoderDojo Clonakilty has been in operation since May 2012 when 25 kids came to the Quality Hotel and none of us really knew exactly what to expect. Since then CoderDojo in Clonakilty has evolved into a hub of high tech activity held every Friday evening when approximately 60 young coders descend onto the Quality Hotel with laptops, gadgets, robotic equipment, circuit boards and more in hand and take off to another world, developing websites, games, app, robots etc. and have great fun doing it.

Caoimhe Collins and Brigid Creswell have attended CoderDojo since the very early days. We asked for their perspective – these are their words!

“CoderDojo is an awesome place where you can hang out with your mates, be on a gadget and learn totally cool tricks at the same time! Whether you like animations, code, robotics with Kate and more, CoderDojo mentors normally have a few amazing tricks to teach you and if they don’t they will definitely learn them! The whole atmosphere is so friendly and welcoming. There is always somebody to talk to! You can meet Thady and see his spectacular demos; he nearly always has something new to show! The things that people of around seven on their third day come up with are probably more imaginative than a pro coder could come up with! CoderDojo is awesome because even if you do not do something amazing in one session, you see others make things that inspire your idea the next week! There is ALWAYS something cool happening! Also it has the one BEST rule ever, BE COOL!

We’ve had things like a 3D printer and Arduino and Raspberry Pi demonstrations. You can also share you knowledge with others and help out mentoring. Just like in a dojo, there are different coloured USB wristbands, like a belt in Tae Kwon Do. There’s white, yellow, blue, green, orange, red, purple and black.  As well as that, we have a showcase day to show off what we’ve done and that’s where you receive a wristband. There are also great competitions to enter such as The Coolest Projects Awards in June, The Scratch Competition and The Eircom Junior Spider Awards, which we have entered our website, www.u-runique.weebly.com, into. One of the great things about CoderDojo is that you can work together on projects, like Brigid and myself are. You don’t have to be a genius at CoderDojo, anyone can learn!  It’s great craic and we’re always looking forward to seeing new faces!”

Simon Jennings is an avid programmer and tells us that “CoderDojo is a place for kids aged 5-16 years. CoderDojo is great for kids who want to learn to program and make computer games. Some of the programs that you can use are HTML5 (a program for developing websites), Scratch (a simple game development program), Arduino (a program to build and control robots) and much more. The best bit is that CoderDojo is extremely fun and completely free. You can make loads of friends and learn lots about code. CoderDojo is a great thing to do on a Friday night and I would highly recommend it!”

This May CoderDojo celebrates its 3rd year in operation and to mark this occasion we will hold an evening Expo event at the Quality Hotel on the 8th May where the Ninja’s will showcase their projects to invited guests, parents and dignitaries in an informal and fun setting.

We are extremely grateful to the Quality Hotel in Clonakilty who have so generously provided CoderDojo with a great venue each week. SouthWestern have also been a great support to CoderDojo in Clonakilty since we started and have generously sponsored our awards which will be presented to the ninja’s on the 8th May. We are also immensely grateful to all our mentors who give their time each week.

For more information about CoderDojo go to https://coderdojowestcork.wordpress.com or email us at clonakilty@coderdojo.com. We are particularly interested in finding new mentors so if you think you could help please do contact us. You can also follow us on Facebook (CoderDojo Clonakilty).

CoderDojo’s Festive Night 2014

P1040845    P1040847

Our 67th CoderDojo session was held on the last Friday of November. This was our last session for 2014 and was attended by 60 very enthusiastic kids and their parents. We were very honoured to have our Deputy Mayor, Cionnaith O’Súilleabháin attend. Cionnaith has always been a great supporter of CoderDojo in Clonakilty. He spoke about imagination and happiness and the opportunities that our young coders will have in the future. He also very willingly tested out some of the festive games being created that evening and learned to play a makey makey piano with a banana – impressive stuff indeed.

We were also delighted to have Irene O’Callaghan of the Quality Hotel in attendance. We are so fortunate to have the support of the Quality Hotel and all their staff who have accommodated us so generously and patiently each week. It’s just a great venue for CoderDojo. Thank you so much!

We also showed our video highlighting pictures of the whole year. You can view it here.

The ninja’s did some great demos – some extremely festive and all very creative. …it was a busy night reflecting what has been another very busy year for CoderDojo Clonakilty. We highlighted many of our successes during the year. We have lots more to do and are very much looking forward to getting started again in 2015. All our young coders deserve great credit for all they have achieved during the year.

You can view a gallery of the night here with thanks to Wendy Cullinane for the superb photos!

None of this could be done without the support of our mentors and parents – we are so grateful.

Our next session will be on Friday 16th January (subject to confirmation). More info to follow. If you have any queries just email clonakilty@coderdojo.com.
