One of the benefits of attending #DailDojo was seeing what other Dojo’s are doing. I saw a few kids were working with App Inventor, which like Scratch, has been developed at MIT http://appinventor.mit.edu/ and is very cool!!!
It seems to be very intuitive and after discussing with mentors from other Dojos I think it seems to be a good logical “next step” from Scratch and it would be great to introduce it to Clonakilty CoderDojo when we return in September. Some kids in Clonakilty have been working very well with “GameMaker” and developing some very cool games after moving on from Scratch so I think that our Ninja’s will also really enjoy working with App Inventor.
Creating an App Inventor App begins in your browser where you design how the app will look. Then, like fitting together puzzle pieces, you set your app’s behavior. All the while, through a live connection between your computer and your phone, your app appears on your phone.
There are lots of resources and tutorials available on the on the App Inventor Tutorials web page.
It’s slightly trickier than Scratch to get started but once set up there is no limit to the types of Apps that may be developed.
So if there are any rainy days (hopefully not too many) in West Cork between now and September and if you or your kids are looking for something cool to do take a look at App Inventor. Let us know how you get on!
