CoderDojo Clonakilty restarting Friday 11th September

CoderDojo

Just to let you know that we will be restarting CoderDojo Clonakilty on Friday 11th September (6:30-8:30pm) at the Quality Hotel.

You can register online (commencing Saturday 5th September 9:30am) at http://coderdojoclonakilty.eventbrite.com

Please note that places are limited so early registration is advisable.

If places are full do register on the Waitlist as we always do our very best to accommodate everyone.

At a CoderDojo young people learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and more. Dojos are set up, run by and taught by volunteers. In addition to learning to code, members meet like minded people, share what they have been working on and so on. CoderDojo makes development and learning to code a fun, sociable, interactive experience. CoderDojo also puts a strong emphasis on open source and free software and has a strong network of members and volunteers globally.

CoderDojo has just one rule “ Above All: Be Cool” , bullying, lying, wasting people’s time and so on is uncool.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING:

  • A laptop, if you have one (borrow if necessary) and fully charged where possible.
  • A Parent! Very Important – If you child is Aged 12 and under you must stay with your child for the duration of the session.
  • Extension leads are also very useful.

Places are open to kids age 8 upwards – Some kids do start at age 7+ and we feel that it is up to the parent to decide if they are ready. It really depends on the ability of the child and how happy they are at CoderDojo.

For more information see www.coderdojo.com and www.coderdojowestcork.wordpress.com.

We are very grateful to The Quality Hotel Clonakilty for supplying a venue. Please show your thanks and support the hotel in buying refreshments while you are there. We are also very grateful to our mentors who volunteer each week. If you would like to become a mentor please email clonakilty@coderdojo.com – We will be delighted to hear from you.

Clonakilty CoderDojo EXPO – An event celebrating a very bright future for 60+ young coders

On the 8th May CoderDojo Clonakilty hosted its 3rd EXPO at the Quality Hotel to celebrate the achievements of all the kids who have been attending CoderDojo and allow them the opportunity to showcase their projects, games, apps, websites, robotics and much more to their friends, families and special guests. It was also an opportunity to celebrate CoderDojo Clonakilty’s 3rd Birthday.

Over 65 Young Coders were in attendance and presented their projects ranging from lots of great Scratch games and animations, Lusitania and Fashion/Self-esteem websites  amongst others, an electronic home-made guitar, a human Makey-Makey circuit and 3D Modelling/Printing.

One of our special guests for the evening was Con McCarthy from the European Space Agency who was very impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of all the young coders in the room and spoke to all the kids about his experiences working in the ESA. His audience were clearly mesmerised by his tales and the seed was planted for a number of potential space engineers that evening.  Con stressed the importance of pursuing STEM subjects for their futures and the benefits CoderDojo provides to our local community.

Our Mayor of Clonakilty Colette Twomey was also in attendance and presented a number of awards on the evening. Colette was clearly delighted with what she saw at the EXPO and was impressed with the technical knowledge and ability of such a young group of people. Colette was also very happy to see a number of very capable young girls involved at CoderDojo and highlighted the importance of continuing to attract more girls to CoderDojo and to Science and Technology in general.

As well as celebrating the achievements of the children, the night was also about thanking those that make CoderDojo possible each week —David Henry, Irene O’Callaghan and all the staff at the Quality Hotel for providing a great space for the Dojo each week, Trevor Kingston of HighResolution who kindly provides all our printing including the 3D variety and of course the mentors who provide their valuable time free of charge each week.

The event, sponsored by SouthWestern, was also an opportunity to show more local businesses and IT professionals what CoderDojo is about in an effort to urge more to participate as mentors and in other support roles. The USB bands were sponsored by SouthWestern who were represented by Peadar Murphy on the evening. Peadar is also looking forward to recruiting a number of our CoderDojo graduates in the future.

CoderDojo’s Festive Night 2014

P1040845    P1040847

Our 67th CoderDojo session was held on the last Friday of November. This was our last session for 2014 and was attended by 60 very enthusiastic kids and their parents. We were very honoured to have our Deputy Mayor, Cionnaith O’Súilleabháin attend. Cionnaith has always been a great supporter of CoderDojo in Clonakilty. He spoke about imagination and happiness and the opportunities that our young coders will have in the future. He also very willingly tested out some of the festive games being created that evening and learned to play a makey makey piano with a banana – impressive stuff indeed.

We were also delighted to have Irene O’Callaghan of the Quality Hotel in attendance. We are so fortunate to have the support of the Quality Hotel and all their staff who have accommodated us so generously and patiently each week. It’s just a great venue for CoderDojo. Thank you so much!

We also showed our video highlighting pictures of the whole year. You can view it here.

The ninja’s did some great demos – some extremely festive and all very creative. …it was a busy night reflecting what has been another very busy year for CoderDojo Clonakilty. We highlighted many of our successes during the year. We have lots more to do and are very much looking forward to getting started again in 2015. All our young coders deserve great credit for all they have achieved during the year.

You can view a gallery of the night here with thanks to Wendy Cullinane for the superb photos!

None of this could be done without the support of our mentors and parents – we are so grateful.

Our next session will be on Friday 16th January (subject to confirmation). More info to follow. If you have any queries just email clonakilty@coderdojo.com.

Meet the Maker – Kate O’Donovan

Earlier this year Clonakilty CoderDojo was one of 5 Dojo’s in Ireland selected to pilot the newly released Galileo Gen 2, the latest in a family of Arduino*-certified development boards based on Intel® architecture. 16 year old Kate O’Donovan was one of our enthusiasts who represented Clonakilty CoderDojo at the Dublin Maker event which took place in Trinity College Dublin on July 26th. Here is a great interview with Kate compiled by Michelle Molly of Intel Corporate Affairs.

This year Ronan Coakley had an extremely busy year coding at CoderDojo. He represented Clonakilty at the National Scratch Finals where he won the award for Best Animation for his amazing project Catch the Fly .

Soon after he attended the CoolestProjects at DCU in Dublin. He documents his experience at the CoolestProjects here.

My name is Ronan. I am nine years old. I went to the Helix with my game CATCH THE FLY 2, for the Coolest Projects Awards on the 7th of May.
First I had to register my project. After that I set up my game in a large room. About one and a half hours later, a judge came to me. I told her all about my game that I had made. When the judge left, I went over to see Kate and how she had got on with her Galileo board.

At five o’ clock, we went to the Awards ceremony. First up on stage, was the Scratch contestants. There were ninety five Scratch projects which was the biggest category. I was one of these.

I received my yellow belt for entering the competition. I was delighted with this. I sadly did not win.

I lifted the Liam MacCarthy Cup which was borrowed for a few hours from the GAA Dublin Museum and was on show in the Helix. It was very heavy and it was HUGE!! I was over the moon to lift the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

The next day I attended a few talks with my Mum. One talk was about making my own App.

I am delighted with myself for going to the Coolest Projects. I have already started my next game for the Coolest Projects 2015.

We hope you are all enjoying your Summer holidays and look forward to seeing you back at the Quality Hotel for CoderDojo 2014/2015 in September. Watch this space for more updates.

CoderDojo Clonakilty & Scratch Competition National Finals 2014

image002

It has been a very busy year so far at CoderDojo Clonakilty. A number of our young coders have entered the National Scratch Competition while others continue to work on their CoolestProjects. Not to mention lots of great stuff going on with the #intelgalileo projects. Watch this space.

We would just like to say congratulations to all those from Clonakilty who entered the 2014 Scratch Competition. Thank you for all your hard work and for your highly creative and wonderful Scratch project submissions.

25 projects out of 960 entries from all over Ireland were selected to proceed to the National Finals and by all accounts the standard of Scratch projects created this year was exceptionally high.

We are delighted to announce that 2 projects were selected from Clonakilty CoderDojo this year – “Yoy Snakes” by Tom O’Donovan in the Junior Infants to 1st Class Category and “Catch the Fly” by Ronan Coakley in the 2nd Class to 4th Class Category.

The finals will take place in the Printworks conference centre in Dublin Castle next Friday and we would like to take this opportunity to say well done to Tom and Ronan and wish them the very best of luck!

Certificates will be awarded to all students that entered the competition so congrats to everyone including mentors and parents who helped in any way on any of the projects!!

CoderDojo Clonakilty will resume on Friday 9th May (Register at http://coderdojoclonakilty.eventbrite.com ).

Look forward to seeing you all soon!

Quality Hotel Clonakilty & CoderDojo – a perfect combination!

What a wonderful endorsement we received from the Quality Hotel in Clonakilty this week. We are incredibly fortunate to have the Quality Hotel as our venue each week for CoderDojo and we are immensely grateful to David Henry, Irene O’Callaghan and all the team at the Quality for their continued support.

“The Quality hotel is in a winning location. Clonakilty is Ireland’s first fair-trade town, a tidy town and a European Destination of Excellence. More than this, it is unique for pursuing quirky initiatives and unique festivals with a community spirit that is unrivalled.

When the local CoderDojo group came to the hotel to convince us to provide them with a meeting room facility once a week, we were intrigued. Coder what? “Lots of young people writing code”. Right…hmmm…well…that sounds lovely???

So a bit of research later, we were a little more intrigued but convinced and we decided let’s give it a try.
Now two years later, we welcome the familiar sight of young children and adults arriving on a Friday evening, laptops in hand. They bring a vibe to the hotel, a slightly crazy sort of buzz that something exciting is happening!

Mums and Dads chat over a cup of coffee while watching, still slightly mesmerised, as their kids make it look so easy, writing code and completing projects that are so clever, so cool.

The CoderDojo team have produced our Christmas ecard, given us brilliant exposure on twitter and other social media channels and we are now working together to develop an app for the hotel to promote our special offers. On a Friday evening when the CoderDojo meeting is done, some families enjoy a meal in the hotel and the discussions and creativity continue. Our hotel tagline is “We’re big on the little things” and CoderDojo couldn’t be a truer ambassador of this.”

QualityOffer

On behalf of all the CoderDojo kids, mentors and parents that attend CoderDojo each week at the Quality Hotel we would like to say THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
